Padatik, Kolkata (estd.1972) is one of the premier institutions in the field of the performing arts in India, especially in Theatre and Dance.
The group was founded by Shyamanand Jalan – one of the foremost figures in the evolving Hindi theatre since the 1950’s. A recipient of the Sangeet Natak Academy (SNA) Award (1972), he was also later appointed Vice- Chairman of SNA (1999 – 2004).
Shyamanand Jalan’s productions over the last 39 years include Evam Indrajit, Sakharam Binder, Hazaar Chaurasi ki Maa, Shakuntala, Panchhi Aise Aate Hain, Uddhwasth Dharamshala, Janata ki Shatru, Biwiyon Ka Madarsa, Aadhe Adhurey, Kauwa Chala Hans ki Chaal, Raja Lear, Lehron ka Rajhans & Madhavi to name just a few.
Our productions, both in theatre and dance have toured extensively all over the globe. Padatik had also organized the ‘International Seminar on Indian Dance Traditions and Modern Theatre’ in collaboration with International Theatre Institute (UNESCO) in 1983, and the ‘International Festival and Seminar on Theatre, Dance and Martial Arts’ in 1987.
Padatik Theatre continues to be known for its innovative stage productions and for running its own performance spaces, which are one-of-their-kind studio theatres in the city.

Vinay Sharma , whose major productions include Ek Anarchist Ki Ittefaqia Maut, Godot ka intezaar karte huye, Weekend, ho sakta hai do aadmi do kursiyaan and Atmakatha.
Kunal Padhi , whose notable productions include Gali Chahat Wali, Yeh Zindagi Aakhir Kiski, Wada Chirebandi and Late Lateef.
Janardan Ghosh , who has recently directed Hayavadana, Ek je Chilo Brikkho and Khela
Eminent Guest theatre directors invited over the years have included Satyadev Dubey (Mumbai), Rajinder Nath (Delhi), Fritz Bennewitz (Germany), Ranjit Kapoor (Mumbai), Anmol Vellani (Delhi), Vincenzo Cozzy (Italy), Rodney Marriot (USA), Jayant Kriplani (Mmbai) and Wlodzimierz Staniewski(Gardziniece,Poland).
Padatik Dance Center was launched in 1989 and is a thriving center for Classical as well as Contemporary Dance. It is known for its training in Kathak and encouraging creativity under the supervision of director Smt. Chetna Jalan, who is herself, a renowned Kathak exponent.
Legendary Kathak Maestro Pt. Birju Maharaj and the iconic Odissi exponent Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra have also been associated with Padatik Dance Centre.
Padatik Cultural Center is a charitable trust under which presently 3 non-profit making societies are functioning i.e PADATIK (The Theatre Group), PADATIK DANCE CENTRE & PADATIK CONTEMPORARY DANCE CENTRE.
